'Fake' Christians

An interesting article passed on to me by my good friend Lisa: More teens becoming 'fake' Christians. Discusses the disconnect teenagers feel with their faith. Many call themselves Christians but know very little about the truths of their faith.

The article explores the new book "Almost Christian," written by Kenda Dean a minister, a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. The book argues that many parents and pastors are unwittingly passing on a self-serving strain of Christianity. The teenagers Dean spoke with thought that God simply wanted them to feel good and do good -- what the study's researchers called "moralistic therapeutic deism." Dean argues that it's due to a lack of knowledge of who God truly is that teenagers/young adults slip away from their faith. There are countless studies that show that religious teenagers do better in school, have better relationships with their parents and engage in less high-risk behavior. They do a lot of things that parents pray for. I'm challenged to ask what are we doing as a station and as leaders in our church community to show the character of God to teens. Last week at the Casting Crowns concert I met two beautiful & faith-filled teenage girls. I think of all the amazing conversations they are having at their schools and with their friends. These are the type of girls that need to be raised. The question is what role do each of us play in the lives of teens we know?
