Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend the Ottawa simulcast of the Chick-fil-a Leadercast in Atlanta, Georgia. Approximately five thousand people attended the live event and another 115,000 people watched via satellite in 750 locations around the world.
I loved the conference, great choice of speakers & hosts! It was exhilarating to be in a room filled with some of Ottawa's best leaders. If you weren't able to attend, mark the conference down for next year – May 9th, 2014. Overall my BIG takeaway is: leaders are calm, leaders find simplicty in complexity. Every speaker drew from these two ideas & they have impacted me, not just in my work environment but my home environment, church environment and volunteer environment. Be calm & simply lead. Here are the points that I took from each of the incredible speakers. chick-fil-aleadercast.com

- Simply lead
- Surround yourself with smarter people
- Level 5 leaders have the humility to be the dumbest person in the room
- Growth creates complexity
- Complexity is the enemy of clarity
- Clarity is the most important thing
- If you're the only one doing what you're doing you don't have to be that good to be big
- Keep it simple so you don't lose sight
- You need to be able to take time as a leader to refocus your self
- Three Questions:
- What are we doing? - same for everyone
- Why are we doing it? - same for everyone
- Where do I fit it? - unique to the individual
- If you don't know exactly what you're doing, you're going to have a hard time doing it!
- What would happen if you didn't exist?
- If you lose sight of the WHY then you lose the motivation & it just becomes a job
- What is your critical role? What is your unique contribution? What is your core responsibility?
- Home work: One sentence job description
- Admin description: Keep all the nonessential tasks & decisions away from your boss so they can do what only they can do

- Crisis evokes serenity
- It times of crisis everything important becomes very clear
- How to we get this clarity without having a crisis & everything that goes along with it?
- Appropriately engaged
- In order to make simplicity out of the chaos you must know:
- When you're not in crisis you think we need more time
- The chaos is your head not your the world
- Everyone who's done anything great only had 24hrs
- It's not about time! It's about space - room to think & be innovative
- Critical element is getting room
- You are most productive when you have the freedom to make a mess
- Perspective & control = must be balanced
- Nature does not hurry, yet everything gets done - use this as your example
- Appropriately engaging with your world
- Flexibility not perfection
- Shift in & out & Up & down fast
- Do not multitask but rather shift quickly
- Listen to what is on your mind
- #1 Capture your thinking - Anything that is on your mind, get it off your mind
- Write it down
- But don't just leave it there
- Make your list clear
- #2 Make outcome/action decision
- Clear on who's doing what
- You must look at everything you need to do & create a map
- The map guides you in life & keeps things clear
- What's the outcome I'm committed to

- Courage to create a necessary ending
- Sometimes you have more buds than you can sustain & you need to prune the ones you cannot sustain
- Realize when the season has passed & it's over (phone book)
- Leaders need to separate themselves from things & unfortunately sometimes people
- Hoarder pattern in life: you have to be the source of everything, attachment & longing
- Boundary on yesterday is gone
- Boundary on focused attention
- Good leaders lead in ways that people can actually follow
- Attend to what is relevant
- Inhibit everything else
- Creating a working memory
- Reaching goals: Desire will not do it, it's about what gets prioritized

- Communicators take something complicated & make it simple.
- Connectors do the difficult work of keeping it simple
- It isn't easy to be simple but it's effective (not simplistic)
- Simplistic - shallow & fast
- Complex - deep & slow
- Simple - deep & fast
- Example:
- Experience is the best teacher - simple but shallow
- Complexity requires questioning
- Leadership is not a position
- Leadership is influence
- How to simply lead:
1. Add value to people everyday - intentionally 2. Subtract your leadership land minds - there are parts of our leadership that can destroy us. Ex trying to make everyone happy. Put others first. 3. Multiply your strengths by developing them 4. Divide your weaknesses by delegating them
- Answer: be the leader who solves the problem
