BREAKING! Michael Tait Departs The Newsboys

On January 16, 2025, Michael Tait announced he is leaving the Newsboys after being the band’s lead singer for 15 years.

In March of 2009, Newsboys announced the departure of lead singer Peter Furler, who led the band for the preceding 12 years. I’ll never forget the shock when, after CHRI began promoting their “Join The Tribe Tour” date at the Robert Guertin Arena in Hull, they announced the member change. "The DC Talk guy?", we questioned. So, we adjusted our advertising approach to incorporate this major shift and the concert (which also featured DecemberRadio, VOTA, and Bread of Stone) did NOT disappoint! Michael went on to carry The Newsboys through a new season and new generation.

Tait shared that his decision to step down from the band didn’t “come lightly.” In fact, it was a “shock” even to him. But after a time of prayer and fasting, Tait believes it is the right decision. The “Jesus Freak” singer said that he is nervous about what the future holds but is trusting in Jesus’ words recorded in Matthew 6: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

The Newsboys’ first studio album featuring Tait was Born Again, released on July 13, 2010 and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.

According to the band’s official announcement on Facebook, they will be kicking off the Worldwide Revival Nights Tour this weekend as planned. “Newsboys has never been one person, one lead singer, or one band member - it has always been something so much bigger than any one of us.”, the statement said. “Ministry through music is what we do, and that Ministry is what Jeff, Jody, and Duncan have Faithfully pursued with Newsboys for over 30 years.”

It has not been confirmed who will be replacing Tait, however, in 2023 they added Adam Agee (formerly of Stellar Kart and Audio Adrenaline) as the band's "fifth member", so it is suspected that he will take a more "frontman" role.
