"Hey it’s Care and this week’s Monday Motivation is from Pierre de Coubertin: “The most important thing is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.”
He is considered the father of the modern Olympic Games and was the founder of the International Olympic Committee. This quote was on the end screen of the movie Eddie The Eagle I watched over the weekend about English Olympic ski jumper Michael Edwards who put his soul in to what he did... He tried and failed, was criticised and tried again. He had a dream of competing in the Olympics and didn’t need to earn a medal to feel like he’d won.
The final destination is not the point. The journey is the point. Being courageous enough to try. Playing the game fair and giving it your best is where victory is found.
Getting to take part in something, experience it, pour your heart out and do your best THAT’S where the reward is.
If the ultimate goal was just to win, at what cost?
This line from Coubertin is quoted a lot in the context of the Olympics, but the rest of this quote is: “To spread these principles is to build up a strong and more valiant and, above all, more scrupulous and more generous humanity.”
He had a point. In a world like that, every body wins. Happy Monday!"
