I learned early on as a parent that you need to make deals with your kids. There's a level of negotiation that happens, but no one told me that it can backfire! My 5-year-old is making demands and deals now.
This morning it was “rub my back or I'm not coming downstairs”, “carry me or I'm not eating breakfast”.
And when I didn't comply, it turned into crying and screaming. It breaks my heart when I have to walk out of the room if he doesn't calm down. I never want my kid to think he'll be abandoned for being emotional and needy. But when I came back in, he asked politely will you please Carry Me and he put his arms up. In that moment I knew I had to make the right choice: Punish him after he calmed down with the consequences of disobeying, Or, hug him and take him in my arms, giving him a redo.
I learned pretty early on as a parent that I may never be able to love my kids as unconditionally as God the Father loves me, but I'm going to spend my whole life trying so they know God's love.
