Camping Gear Recommendations from a Scout Leader

chri blog will camping1With more than 30 years in Scouting, both as a youth and as a leader, CHRI's Producer Will has camped through his fair share of rainstorms, sunny weekends, and everything in between. From it all, he has learned one simple truth: the right gear doesn't just make camping easier—it makes it more enjoyable. READ MORE for his top recommended outdoor/camping gear.

Whether you're pitching a tent for the very first time or you've spent countless nights under the stars, every camping trip becomes better when you're comfortable, organized, and prepared.

You don't need to buy every gadget and gimmick on the market, but there are a handful of items that consistently earn a permanent place in the back of my minivan because they genuinely improve the experience. From keeping mosquitoes at bay during dinner to lighting up camp so kids can safely find their way back after dark, these are products I've used in real camping situations and can confidently recommend to help make your next adventure more comfortable, memorable, and fun.

String it up around your campsite for decoration or safety. Solar or USB rechargeable and lots of features. Will had it up between our campsites so the kids could find their way at night. Tip – use the remote to set 4/6/8 hour shut-off timer.

SUP, Stand Up Paddle Board - https://amzn.to/4wBDMa8
Freedom to explore lakes and rivers that fits in a backpack. One moment the kids were using it as a diving board, the next Will was paddling off across the lake to go explore. Fits in a backpack, only weights 19 lbs, and is easy to set up and get on the water. Tip – make sure you fill it to the correct pressure for better stability

Thermacellhttps://amzn.to/4ynaAp3
Keeps mosquitos 20 ft away. You don’t always have to be coated in bug spray to enjoy the outdoors. It protected Will while he was cooking, and it kept the area mosquito-free so everyone could enjoy meals outdoors, and not crowded into a dining tent. Tip – you can look at the little window in the back to see how much fluid is left

Camping or backpacking on your own? A hammock tent is lightweight and lets you sleep just about anywhere. Maybe Will’s teenager just wanted some extra space to get away from the family? Tip – make sure it’s pulled tight enough, and if you angle your body from one corner to the opposite, it creates a flatter surface for sleeping

Cooking for Twohttps://amzn.to/4vxTzWH
When backpacking or lightweight camping, everything you need to cook and serve for two people (minus the fuel) in one small package. Will and his wife hiked in to Frontenac park, and left all of the heavy family-camping equipment behind. Tip – bring a little silicone spatula for stirring and easier cleanup.

Keep It Cleanhttps://amzn.to/4psRees
Bodywash, shampoo, dish washing, clothes washing, in a highly concentrated airport-friendly size. Will uses it on.... Everything! Tip - Just a few drops is all you need

Inflatable Pillowhttps://amzn.to/4ppbKfJ
Packs up real small, and is surprisingly comfortable. Will ditched the stuffed pillows for this lightweight alternative. Tip – Fill it up, lay down on it, and slowly let out the air until it’s the perfect thickness.
